Heather and Andrew met in 2005 in high school and have been inseparable since. In 2008, while doing their undergraduate degrees at the University of California--Davis they studied abroad in New Delhi, India for six months. At the ripe age of 19, they promised each other that "when they grew up" they would regularly take time off from the real world. A decade passed and now teetering into their 30's they realized that now they are grown up, it's time for another sabbatical.
In 2013, Heather and Andrew began riding motorcycles. They took the California Highway Motorcycle Safety Course, bought a Kawasaki Ninja 250, and puttered around the San Francisco Bay Area. They then took trips to Vietnam, and then Thailand, and enjoyed traveling through countries on two wheels. So when the sabbatical idea came up, it was obvious that it was going to involve motorcycles. Inspired by The Long Way Around, documenting Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman riding around the world on motorcycles, Heather and Andrew decided to start in Mongolia and then ride West. This is the origin of donkey diaries.
